Saracosa Rosso di Toscana IGT.
Saracosa is inspired by the ‘Super Tuscans’ – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s. These wines kick started the region’s renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is crafted by Sofia Barbanera on her family’s Tuscan estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the 2018 vintage the old vines here delivered intensely concentrated grapes, full to bursting with ripe fruit flavour.
This is a stunning example of a classic, Super Tuscan format, a blend Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, the fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. The result is this rich, velvety, Super Tuscan style red with dark cherry and herbs, from the Sangiovese, while the Cab fruit offers body, colour and added complexity, and the Merlot gives it a silky finish.
This is a headstrong Tuscan red right in its pomp. The perfume is rich and varied, combining notes of morello cherry, blueberry, and juicy plum along with beautiful notes of violet and jasmine, and a delicate hit of white spice. The palate is mouth-filling with ripe, plump tannins that are nicely evolved and concentrated notes of purple plum and red berries with garrigue, white pepper and a hint of thyme. The finish is long and rewarding and leaves you wanting more…
